Join the Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) on Wednesday October, 18th at 7 p.m. at the Beam Classroom, Visual Arts Center, Bowdoin College for the first presentation in FOMB’s 2000-2001 Speaker Series entitled, What is Sensible Forestry? A Look at Both Sides of the Forestry Referendum.

Concern over clear cutting and other forestry practices has again brought a referendum to the November ballot. Two speakers, representing different sides of the debate on this referendum, will be given an opportunity to explain their positions, respond to the statements of the other speaker and take questions from the audience. Jonathan Carter is the author or the forestry referendum and Cliff Foster is a State Representative opposed to the referendum.

The Speaker Series takes place on the third Wednesday of every month, October to May. In November, Dan McAuley of the USGS Pawtuxent Wildlife Research Center will speak on black and mallard ducks. The series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Friends of Merrymeeting Bay with help from the Bowdoin College Environmental Studies Program and Enterprise Farms with valuable door prizes donated by Patagonia. Refreshments will be served. To receive more information on FOMB’s programs, and a schedule of the 2000-2001 speaker Series, call Warren Whitney, Executive Director of Friends of Merrymeeting Bay at 666-3376.
